Different kinds of Adventure Sports
Adventure sports can be broadly categorized under three main headings, land, water and air.

Land Sports
These are the most common types and India excels in providing training at different levels. Some of the sports are trekking, rock climbing, hiking, biking, skiing, adventure racing, snowboarding, mountain biking, land yachting, desert safari etc.

Air Sports 
Paragliding, sky surfing, flying fox, bungee jumping, hot air ballooning and sky diving are some of the common air sports.

Water Sports
White water rafting, scuba diving, snorkelling, yacht racing, kayaking, cliff diving, canoeing, boat racing and so on are some of the common water sports.

Eligibility
Talking about personal attributes, main trait required for a career in Adventure Sports is physical and mental fitness along with sporting spirit. Also required is team spirit and leadership qualities, high levels of responsibility and a strong sense of commitment. To secure employment in this field, certification from any Adventure sport institute is enough. Proficiency in swimming is mandatory for water based sports. For getting jobs in Excursion agencies and Holiday resorts proficiency in any foreign language is necessary as the candidate might have to deal with tourists from across the world.

Course
If you wish to opt for Adventure sports as career, you need to initiate with a 5-7 days Adventure Course that gives you an exposure to adventure and then you may go for higher level courses such as Basic, Intermediate, Advance to Master of Instructions (MOI) Courses.

Cost of studying in an institute could cost you anything between ₹ 5,000 to ₹ 50,000.

Career Prospects
Adventure sports are gaining popularity throughout the world especially in the tourism sector as part of Adventure Tourism. Due to the involvement of the media (National Geographic, Discovery, AXN etc), people have become more aware of adventure sports activities around them and want to plan an adventure holiday.

In a geographically diverse country like India, the prospects for those intending to take up the vocation of adventure sports is bright. Many of the reputed Associations, Companies and Government bodies have been organizing the National/International level events/competition/expedition of Adventure Sports continuously for the past 4-5 years. Ministry of Youth Affairs is also offering many schemes & grants for the promotion of Adventure Sports.

Commercialization of Adventure Sports is on the mount. Numerous companies are offering adventure services and manufacturing the adventure sports equipments. It is expected to play a major role in Indian economy like other industries, very soon.

The present scenario in the field of adventure sports requires more Adventure instructors, event co-ordinators, and marketing/management professionals.

You can expect a pay package starting at ₹ 9,000 - ₹ 10,000 per month. This can go up to  20,000 -  ₹ 25,000 per month depending on what sport you are dealing with. An experienced professional can earn between  600 - ₹ 1,500 per day.
