Detectives & criminal investigators investigate & solve crimes and apprehend criminals. They specialize in specific types of violations such as homicide, sex crimes or those against people or property. Many work for local, state or federal agencies while others are employed privately. Detectives use modern tools & techniques like computers and other telecommunication equipment, to solve crimes ranging from theft, drug trafficking and kidnapping to mass murder. They gather evidence by observing suspects, interviewing witnesses, victims and suspects, and investigating information. Some detectives and criminal investigators can formally charge a suspect with a crime if there is sufficient evidence. Hence, they often participate in arrests or raids.
